What Makes Us Unique

Our Students

Team Up takes a holistic approach to working with students, age 3-21,
who have experienced significant trauma at a young age.

 What is Trauma?

The Harvard Center on the Developing Child defines trauma as an experience of serious adversity or terror - or the emotional or physical response to that experience.

This trauma is best described as Adverse Childhood Experiences or (ACEs).
The CDC defines 10 types of trauma that fall within three major categories:

Having these experiences at a young age, especially 4 or more, indicates an increased likelihood of long-term negative health outcomes such as, changes in the structure of the brain, increased fight or flight response, and impaired learning and short term memory. The effects of these early traumatic experiences last well into adulthood and can lead to health problems, economic distress, addiction, and more.

While the effects of trauma can be significant, we know that creating a safe, trauma-informed environment for students to connect with healthy adults can reduce the effects of trauma and foster resilience.

In addition to helping students build positive mentoring relationships, we also invest in the family unit to create long-term generational change. Our Case managers meet these needs by scheduling medical appointments, enrolling families in counseling, assisting with special education and tutoring services, transporting students to appointments, and ultimately doing whatever it takes to foster growth and success in our students.
